What Is Search Engine Optimization All About?

Search Engine Optimization is a process by which you choose the most appropriate targeted keyword phrases related to your site. This ensures your site ranks highly in the search engines so when someone searches on specific phrases it returns with your site near the top.

It basically involves fine tuning the content of your site along with the HTML and Meta tags. It also involves an appropriate link building process. The most popular search engine is Google, along with Yahoo, MSN and many smaller Search Engines combining for less than half of the total Google searches.

Search engines keep their methods and ranking algorithms secret, so to get credit for finding the most valuable search results and to deter spam pages from clogging those results.

A search engine determines website rankings using hundreds of factors and these factors and the weight each carries, change continually. Algorithms differ so widely that a website that ranks #1 in one particular search engine could rank #200 in another.

If you are unable to research and choose keywords and work on your own search engine ranking, you may want to hire someone to work with you on these issues. Search engine marketing companies, will work with your site and make their recommendations to increase your search engine ranking and website traffic.

Hiring one of these company to do your Search Engine Optimization can be fairly expensive and in many instances, do not do that great of a job. When it was time for me to optimize my website, I knew absolutely nothing about Search Engine Optimization.

I did not know where to start and I knew I could not afford the cost of hiring a company to do the work for me. As I frantically looked for ways to get this critical work done, I found the ultimate guide to Search Engine Optimization.

The guide I found is called: 3 Steps to Search Engine Success. This book guided me step-by-step through the process by which I was able to do my own SEO work from start to finish.

I have found other SEO books, but they were full of needless details on things that just do not matter to an average website owner like me. But one thing I did find with all the others is they do not tell you what NOT to do! And getting this wrong can cause your site to be blacklisted and you will never show up in the search engine results!

How to get a higher Search Engine Ranking?

To know that, just think about what you do yourself when browsing on the Internet. You type a key-phrase (lets say PHILIPPINE SEO) and click on one of the 10 results you see. That's the time Google starts watching you!
If you return to Google in a very short time, the webpage was obviously not what you were looking for...
Mr. G remembers that and gives that page a lower position in the results.

So how to make sure your visitors stay a long time on your own web-pages?
Make articles that talk about the key-phrase your visitor is looking for; interesting content; easy to read and entertaining.

Google will reward you for the following:

1) Interesting content; easy to read and entertaining because he will count how long a visitor stays at your page. The longer the better your placement.

2) Relevant content; a visitor that lands on your page when he typed 'SEO PHILIPPINES' in his search-engine want to read about Philippine related SEO tips.

3) Unique content; Google doesn't want to stuff his data-base with the same articles.

4) Content that is concentrating on one 'theme' only; do not include subjects that do not relate to your product/service.

5) Age of your website; the older your website, the more you have proven to be serious (you survived the test of time).

6) Frequently refreshed and new content; that shows you keep it up to date.

7) Outbound links; to relevant (-quality!) sites (or web pages) that talk about the same subject as you do.

8) Inbound links (back-link popularity or pagerank); from relevant web sites or pages going not only to your homepage but also to deeper pages.

Hubsite or Authority site ?

You have to make up your mind; which system you use for your web site?
Both are loved by Google, Yahoo etc.

A hub site is where the visitor can find a lot of outbound links to other relevant sites related to the informative articles which are also found on the hubsite.

I see you thinking "How to earn money from that?"
Well, Google and Yahoo are hubsites..! Need I say more?

Lets say you are a search engine ranking firm in the Philippines; make a hub-site about SEO-marketing related issues and put a link to all relevant websites you can find; for free, even to your competitors. The result is a genuine-good-quality-helpfull-website and the searchengines/people will love it. That's the time you gently offer your stuff...

They might click away to a webdeveloper, but maybe they remember you later when they need SEO?
The hubsites are easyer to make than authority sites.

An authority site consists of copywriting about one certain 'theme' or subject and it has not many outbound web links but mostly back-links.

Can you use the next tricks ?

How about making a lot of little extra websites that link to your main site?
Nope. If you host them on the same server, Mr. G. will see that.

How about making a lot of comments in Blogs?
Nope. Most blogs have a 'No-Follow' for the URL or text-link that you add in there and thus search-engines do not see it.
Those with a 'Do-Follow'; how long will your comment stay there?
Note also that most blog-pages have a pagerank zero. (squidoo.com has a very high pagerank but their pages not).

How about link-exchange (reciprocal links)?
Nope. 'I give you a link if you give me one back'? That's an insult to G.

I admit that these tricks can help a little but eventually only genuine good quality helpfull websites will survive.

If you have a website that people love, you do not need SEO optimization!
Really, they will come in droves, stay very long on your pages, will tell others about you (back links!) etc.
Your website will be around for years to come which give you still more credit; the sky is the limit.
Even when there is an 'Algorithm Change' (search engines sometimes change their analytics to judge your website; new rules) it will barrely effect you.

Sure there will always be ways (tricks) in search engine marketing to get you to the top; but for how long?
And mostly they will cost you heavilly ($$$) or it might even attract the attention of some 'real people' working for Yahoo and then they take a look et voila; you disappear from the screen altogether.

Do I see tears welling up in your eyes?

Do not despair (yet), mostly you will get a very good pagerank by following just a few of these guidelines. And if your product or service is in a niche, you can easily get a number 1 position.
Also be reminded that there is still a lot of gueswork and luck and 'Trial-and-Error' involved, so do not spend too much time listening to those self-proclaimed search engine placement experts exept me ;)
Because eventualy YOU have the most knowledge of your product/service.

If however you want to hire a SEO specialist to do the work for you; remember that this is a very labor-intensive job which makes it interesting to outsource to the Philippines. Check if they offer a 'No Cure No Pay' or tell them you only pay if you make extra sales.

Before you can be successful with an internet business from home, you must possess 3 distinct charachteristics which must come from deep within you and drive you to succeed!

First, you must have an ABSOLUTE DESIRE to make a change.

Your desire will be driven by something within you for something you absolutely WANT and CAN'T have. What is that burning desire within you? Is it a new car, a new house, every toy imaginable?

MOST of the time, People want more time to spend with their family! More time to watch their kids grow up "LIVE" and not on video. Why MUST you have that successful business from home? What is it you MUST HAVE right now?

For me, I was to the point where I hated to see Sunday nights roll around. I was a truck driver and truck drivers are cheated out of more time with family than any other profession, except our brave soldiers around the world! I knew Sunday night meant I would be leaving my family and not see them again until Friday night.

I was luckier than most truckers because I had advanced to a position which I was able to be home every weekend. But that took 2 long years of only seeing my loved ones 1 weekend every 2 or 3 weeks!

That was my ABSOLUTE DESIRE, it was my goal to have a successful internet business from home so I didn't have to leave them every Sunday night.

Next, FAITH is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.

You must have FAITH that it's very possible for you to have a successful business from home and make a good living to satisfy your own ABSOLUTE DESIRES. Robert Collier said, "Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your belief in yourself."

First, I had to have faith in myself. I had to believe and realize there were a lot of people already making a great income with an intenet business from home. I knew it was up to me to find the secret that was making people successful online. I had to find a reliable, legitimate sytem that worked and a mentor who is successful and is willing to share secrets.

Now the hard part...COMMITMENT!

Internet marketing is not something you can get prepared for, you just have to do it. Opportunities never come to those who wait - they are captured by those who dare to attack.

The fact is that home based business success is a moving target... The only thing constant about it is change. We spend the first half of our lives dreaming about the future, then spend the last half bemoaning our failures in the first half, with the results that we LOSE BOTH HALVES.

Fortunately, the loss (if you should fail) of starting your own internet business from home is minimal compared to a brick and mortar business which requires thousands of dollars before you even open the doors.
